Macedonian Newspapers in Argentina 1936-1948
Eleven
editions of newspapers published by the Macedonian migrants to Argentina
are now available in the Pollitecon Free Ebooks Library. There are seven
editions of Makedonski Glas published between 1936 and 1939, three editions
of Federalna Makedonija published between 1947 and 1948, and the first
edition of Ilinden published in 1948. The papers gave the migrants news
of numerous political developments concerning Macedonians including
those under the regimes in Bulgaria and Greece. Makedonski Glas was
published by the Progressive Macedonian Society of Goodwill, whose aims
were to work to organize and unify Macedonian emigration in Argentina,
to morally and materially support the struggle of the Macedonian people
against the oppressive states in their homeland, and to support the
creation of an independent Macedonian Republic. Macedonian activist
Jordan Gruev said the editions are valuable as they give an insight
into how the Macedonians thought about the Macedonian Question and that
the mainstream Macedonians in Argentina supported IMRO (United) under
the banner of Gotse Delchev and were against Ivan Mihailov and Aleksandar
Protogerov. Mr Gruev also thanked the staff of the National Library
of Argentina who were very helpful and went out of their way to assist
him to search for, retrieve and digitize the copies from their archive.
The newspapers are in the Free Ebooks Library under the name Macedonians
of Argentina. They are also Here.

British Travel Writers on the Early 20th Century Macedonian Identity
The paper The British Travel Writers on the Macedonian National Identity
(From the beginning of the 20th century until the end of the First World
War) discusses the views of 10 writers on Macedonian identity and culture
in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among them are British statesman,
William Gladstone and journalists, Henry Brailsford and James Bourchier,
as well as professors and other professionals. Among the important factors,
the writers discuss the roles of politics, religion and poverty in the
formation and public presentation of Macedonian identity, and also the
views of Macedonian women. The paper's author, Tatjana Panova-Ignjatovik,
discusses the experiences and views of each writer and says they present
a multidimensional picture on the Macedonian ethnic culture at the time.
On Macedonian cultural identity and tradition, she says they provide
"substantial evidence that confirms the separateness of the Macedonian
ethnicity." The paper is Here.

The Spirit Of Ilinden Still Needed Today
Pollitecon publisher Victor Bivell did an interview with Nova Makedonija
newspaper as part of the paper's commemoration of Ilinden. The interview
is titled The Spirit Of Ilinden - Self-Respect, Defiance And Freedom
- Are Still Needed Today. It covers why the Ilinden holiday is still
important and what Macedonia as a country can do about the challenges
it is facing. The author say that almost everywhere we look Macedonians
are still under political pressure, that the government needs to be
bolder and call out the Macedonian genocide and cultural genocide, the
non-recognition of the Macedonians in Greece and Bulgaria, and the oppressive
behaviours of France and other Western countries that assist Greece
and Bulgaria to oppress Macedonians. The author also says that more
research is needed into the Macedonian genocide and the best defence
is truth and the courage to use it. The interview is Here.
The Macedonian version is Here.
